Youth Figure Skating, Hockey Fight Over Ice Time

Hockey parents contend figure skaters get more than their fair share of ice time at Edina's rink.

It's a story as old as hackneyed musicals about high school: the artistic kids and the jocks fight over scarce resources.

According to KARE 11, the Edina Public Schools' youth figure skating and Hornets hockey programs are locked in a battle over ice time.

Both groups split their time between the Braemar Ice Arena and other metro-area rinks where they rent ice time, but Hornets parents contend the figure skating program gets far more than its fair share of practice time at the Hornets' home rink.

"The figure skating club is really willing to work to help solve the problem," figure skating coach Kathleen Gazich told the television station.

"We are willing to try to find some compromise," a leading hockey parent said, "but the fact is that we are at a point here now where they (figure skaters) have all their hours at Braemar and we (hockey) have such a small percentage. It seems like it is a conversation that has been long overdue."
