Two-Alarm Fire Scorches Edina Garage

A resident was woken in the middle of the night by the smoke detector.

After a night of thunderstorms and lightning, an Edina duplex resident woke up a little before 3:30 a.m. Saturday to the screeching of the smoke detector and a fire in the garage.

When fire crews arrived, flames were still licking the garage and smoke could be seen billowing from the building's eaves. No injuries were reported, but the garage received moderate damage and the duplex received minor damage, with both structures scarred by smoke.

“Working smoke detectors cut the chances of dying in a house fire in half,” said Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer in a statement. “Thanks to the smoke detectors here, lives were saved and the fire was caught early, saving more of the structure from damage.”

The Edina Fire Department and five mutual aid departments from Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Richfield, St. Louis Park and Hennepin County EMS responded to the two-alarm blaze. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
