The man tried to avoid police by turning his headlights off in the early morning fog.

A St. Paul man is accused of drunkenly fleeing Edina police at speeds of more than 100 miles per hour.

Matthew Michael Jambor, 37, has been charged with one felony count of fleeing a police officer and two counts of misdemeanor drunk driving.

Around 1 a.m. on Tuesday, police received a report of a man in a red Honda Civic driving erratically on southbound Highway 100, according to the criminal complaint. An officer, parked on the highway around 70th street, clocked the car going five miles over the speed limit.

When the officer turned on her lights, the driver kept driving, exiting onto eastbound Interstate 494. The Edina police officer followed, turning on her lights.

Jambor then stepped on the gas, accelerating to around 80 miles per hour, steering his car “evasively and dangerously,” according to the complaint, around a large semi-truck into a construction zone near Penn Avenue.

In the early morning fog, Jambor then turned off his headlights in an apparent attempt to lose the police, speeding up to more than 100 miles per hour as he drove toward the airport.

A spike strip set out by airport police near 24th Avenue punctured Jambor’s tires, stopping his car.

He had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled of alcohol, according to the criminal complaint. His blood alcohol concentration was .14

Jambor was previously convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in 2000.
