Fairview Southdale Buys Three Ultralight, Germ-Busting Robots

The robots could reduce the risk of hospital infection by up to 90 percent.

Fairview Southdale Hospital has purchased a trio of ultralight flashing, germ-zapping robots that will help patients stave off infections.

The three Xenex robots work by pulsing xenon ultraviolet light more than 25,000 times as powerful than the sun. The light pierces and destroys the DNA of harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi and bacterial spores.

The system takes about 15 minutes to run and can neutralize stubborn pathogens including Clostridium difficile (C. diff), norovirus, influenza, and staph bacteria.

The robots cost the hospital $80,000 each, KSTP reports, and could reduce the risk of infection by 50 to 90 percent.
