Edina Planning More Sidewalks, Parking for Strachauer Park

The city's efforts at Strachauer are part of a broader push to place sidewalks near parks.

Edina is considering adding sidewalks and on-street parking to the north side of Strachauer Park. An additional sidewalk on the west side of the park is also being considered in the future.

Upgrades to the five-acre park would also include stormwater management and would likely be completed by 2016 as part of a series of roadway reconstruction projects.

Edina park board member Keeya Steel said she was supportive of the project, though she had doubts about putting parking on the north side of 62nd Street.

“As far as safety, I’m a little skeptical of having both sides of the street be parking, though I know there’s a capacity issue and people need to park somewhere,” she said. “When people are getting out of cars, it can be quite a zoo.”

The project is part of a push for more sidewalks adjacent to parks across the city, and funding will come from Edina’s pedestrian and cycling safety fund. It’s designed to help alleviate the strain of parking on feeder streets—Abbot, Beard and Zenith avenues—during hockey games and other events held in the park.
