Edina Hockey Awarded Some of Figure Skating Club's Ice Time

The Edina City Council voted 3-2 on Tuesday to transfer 159 hours of the skating club's ice time to the Edina Hockey Association for each of the next two seasons.

The Edina Hockey Association (EHA) has won a narrow victory over the Braemar City of Lakes Figure Skating Club (BCLFSC) in the battle for ice time at Edina's Braemar Arena.

The Edina City Council voted 3-2 this week to give the hockey association 159 hours of the skating club’s time for both of the next two seasons.

“They’re both heritage clubs for us, but we’re talking about 120 kids versus 1,300 kids,” said city council member Ann Swenson.

Both clubs hold solid claims to the Braemar Arena, which they’ve used since it opened in 1967, and they’re unlikely to reach an agreement on ice time. Ten hours of negotiations over the past month, mediated by Edina staff, reached no agreement.

The hockey team has ten times the members as the ice skating team, almost all of whom are from Edina. While only about half the skating team has Edina ties, the group has won national competitions.

“We don’t want to take so much time away from figure skating club that they decide they need to leave Edina,” said mayor James Hovland.

City staff will study the issue and present a longer term recommendation to the council in two years.
