State Rep. Keith Downey believes a spillover effect from the problems in France seems likely to hit the U.S.
Editor's Note: The following comes from State Rep. Keith Downey (R-Edina). The views expressed are solely his and do not reflect those of Patch. As the Monday morning quarterbacking begins on our 2012 legislative session, we should look at the big picture. The press of course goes for political headlines, looking at the "stories" in isolation. But the real measure of the 2012 legislature is whether its short term spending and debt will help strategically position Minnesota for success. Situation Economic uncertainty and unsustainable government fiscal imbalances are challenges being faced by states and nations across the world, and unfortunately we are all connected to it. The recent election in France that saw current President Nicolas …

Keith Downey will run for State Senate, while Bill Glahn and Terry Jacobson will compete for House seats.
Nearly two months after its annual convention, the Republican delegates of Senate District 49 have officially endorsed candidates for this fall's elections. Republicans from Edina, Bloomington, Minnetonka and Eden Prairie met Thursday, May 10, at Jefferson High School to formally endorse candidates for three local legislative races. Perhaps the least surprising of the endorsements was Keith Downey—who is wrapping up his second term in the Minnesota House of Representatives—being endorsed as the Republican candidate for State Senate District 49. He was unopposed for the nomination to fill the seat vacated by Geoff Michel's retirement. Downey will face off against DFL candidate and Target attorney Melisa Lopez Franzen for the senate seat. …

Hopkins officials say Excelsior, Minnetonka and Wayzata worry about the staff time involved.
Local leaders originally envisioned the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program as a partnership of six west metro communities helping members of the Minnesota National Guard and their families. But Hopkins officials worry some of the communities have been scared off by unwarranted fears about the demands it would place on city staff. The west metro group was supposed to be made up of Edina, Excelsior, Hopkins, Minnetonka, St. Louis Park and Wayzata. Edina has already passed a resolution supporting the initiative, and Hopkins expects to pass its resolution next week. But Hopkins City Manager Mike Mornson told council members Tuesday that Excelsior and Wayzata aren’t sure they want to participate. Meanwhile, Hopkins council members viewed …

The Edina branch of InterBank was closed by federal regulators on Friday. Customers continue to have access to their money by check, ATM and online this weekend.
Customers of Edina’s branch of InterBank will be doing business with another bank come Monday. Maple Grove-based InterBank was closed by federal regulators with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency on Friday, according to InterBank’s website and media reports. Deposits at Interbank’s four branch locations—including the Edina branch at 3400 W 66th St—have been transferred to Great Southern Bank of Reeds Spring, MO. Other branches are in Maple Grove, Lakeville and Roseville. The former InterBank branches will reopen as Great Southern Bank branches on Monday, says TwinCities.com. InterBank customers can access their accounts online, InterBank’s website says. Customers also can write checks and use their debit cards to access their …

The 6th district, which includes Edina, is currently represented by Jan Callison.
Jan Callison, who represents Edina as a Hennepin County Commissioner in the 6th District, is up for re-election this fall. Callison represents all or part of the following cities: Deephaven, Eden Prairie, Edina, Excelsior, Greenwood, Hopkins, Long Lake, Minnetonka, Minnetonka Beach, Orono, Shorewood, Tonka Bay, Wayzata and Woodland. She was elected to the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners in 2008. This week, the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the final redistricting plan for county commissioner districts. As a result of redistricting, five of the seven commissioners will be on the ballot in fall. Three districts have variations of at least 5 percent–the 1st, 2nd and 7th–and will require elections next fall…

After news Keith Downey would not be seeking reelection, four locals have announced their interest in the open seat.
The Senate District 49 GOP Convention came and went in late March without any clear picture of who would actually be on ballots for local legislative offices this fall. While DFL candidates have already been endorsed for each of the local races—Melisa Lopez Franzen for State Senate, Ron Erhardt for House District 49A and Paul Rosenthal for House District 49B—the GOP side has been in flux with news Sen. Geoff Michel (R-Edina) and Rep. Pat Mazorol (R-Bloomington) would not be seeking reelection. Once Rep. Keith Downey (R-Edina) announced he would be entering the race to fill Michel's Senate seat, the local political scope was completely altered. Those races will finally come into focus when the local Republican party hosts an endorsing …

A California-based design firm gives Edina a watercolor overlay.
As part of our ongoing effort to showcase our community in all mediums, today we're presenting Edina in watercolors. Stamen Design, a California studio, has created a cartographic technique that overlays maps with watercolors. Play around and zoom in and out of scenic Edina. One can't-miss landmark to help orient yourself is the Edina Country Club, seen as the giant green swath above. If you're curious to see what a few other Minnesota cities look like in watercolor, check out this post from from Minnesota Public Radio.

The city council recently approved precinct lines, which were drawn up after the state redistricting process.
Alongside the 10-year cycle of renewing state legislative and congressional boundaries to suit the latest U.S. Census date, Edina's precinct lines are adjusted as well. The Edina City Council unanimously approved the new boundaries at a recent meeting, which in turn will be passed along to the county for approval. By law, city governments must review all precinct boundaries and polling locations following the redistricting process that takes place after the U.S. Census. Edina residents won't notice many significant changes next year, as the city's 19 precincts—and designated polling places—remained mostly unchanged. The change of the city's northeast portion to Congressional District 5 didn't actually have much of an impact on the …

The film will be screening at the Landmark Lagoon Theater in Uptown Minneapolis on Friday, April 13.
As part of an ongoing effort to bring attention to the rampant amount of bullying taking place across the country and in Edina itself, the city's Human Rights & Relations Commission is encouraging residents to head to the movies this Friday. "Bully," a new film aimed at bringing a human scale to the more than 13 million American children who will be bullied this year, is opening at Uptown Minneapolis' Landmark Lagoon Theater this Friday, April 13. The documentary film takes an in-depth look at how bullying has impacted five different families. No word yet on if the film will be screening a bit closer to home—the Lagoon Theater is under the same ownership of 50th & France's own Edina Cinema—but we'd love to hear from any locals who have …

Take a screen shot of your favorite Edina location and upload it to this article. We'll see if we can guess where it is.
