In addition to being part of the National Teacher of the Year competition, Roehl gets to visit the White House, take a class at Harvard and—perhaps most exciting—attend International Space Camp. The Hornets nabbed another victory last week to improve their record to 3-6.
The Edina boys lacrosse team got its third win of the season last Thursday against a tough Wayzata squad. The Hornets struck early and often, outscoring the Trojans 11-7 in the first three quarters of regulation play. The Trojans rebounded to outscore the Hornets 2-1 in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough to make up for the massive lead the Edina boys built up throughout the game. The boys are now 3-6 on the season, with a 2-4 Lake Conference record. They have wins over both Wayzata and Hopkins this season. The team was led in scoring by Derek Todd, who turned in a massive six goals and one assist against the Trojans. The EHS Senior plans to attend the University of Minnesota in the fall.
EHS Senior Cavonte Johnson "works harder, thinks more deeply, struggles more genuinely" than most other students, according to teacher Martha Cosgrove. Given an introduction like that, it's no surprise Johnson is the first student in Edina High School's history to become a Gates Millennium Scholar. Johnson, who plans to enroll in the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota this fall and walk on to the football team, was announced as one of 10 Gates Millennium Scholars in Minnesota this year. The scholarship program was established in 1999 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to provide outstanding, low-income students of color with the opportunity to complete undergraduate degrees.
