South View Teacher's Play Riffs on Charles Dickens, Dr. Seuss

Performances of "What the Dickens?! A New Year's Tale" will be held Dec. 12 through 14 in the South View Middle School auditorium.

A group of middle students procrastinating an assignment are taken on an odyssey influenced by Dr. Seuss and Charles Dickens.

That's the premise behind South View Middle School's winter play, "What the Dickens?! A New Year’s Tale."

Kathleen Hartman, the school's 6th- and 8th-grade art teacher wrote the play last June because, she said, she couldn't find a script that was "inclusive enough," which would "make everyone, no matter what and how they celebrate, feel included.”

“I thought I could easily write an adaptation to ‘A Christmas Carol’, but after setting it in present day Edina, I had to rewrite, rework, update, alter, edit, change and add to Dickens’ story," Hartman said in a statement. "It was a ton of work, but also really a lot of fun.”

"What the Dickens?! A New Year’s Tale" runs Dec. 12 & 13 at 7:00 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the South View Middle School auditorium. Tickets are available for purchase during lunches Dec. 10, 12 & 13 as well as one hour prior to each show. Thursday ticket price is $5 for everyone; Friday and Saturday tickets cost $5/students and $10/adults.
