Tuesday: Edina Schools Closed Again Due to 'Dangerous Temperatures'

Tuesday will mark the fifth day of cancelled classes this month. District staff have proposed three makeup days.

All Edina public schools will be closed again Tuesday due to the "continued dangerous temperatures."

The cancellation also applies to ECSE programs and Edina Community Education programs, including Edina Family Center classes and childcare, KIDS Club, WISE Guys and Surge, and youth and adult enrichment programs. After school and evening activities, including the Pajama Orchestra Concert, are also canceled. Minnesota State High School League sponsored competitions will proceed as scheduled.

The Edina School Board will vote Monday evening on district staff's proposal to add three makeup days to the school calendar:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 5, previously planned as a late-start day
  • Tuesday, Feb. 18, previously scheduled as a professional day for staff, and
  • Friday, March 7, previously scheduled for conferences and as a professional day.
Forecasters predict Tuesday's high will be zero degrees Fahrenheit, with wind chill values as low as -40 degrees.

Almost every school in the state, including the University of Minnesota, called off classes Monday as daybreak temperatures were below zero.

Brutally cold weather has ruined the chance for any regular five-day school weeks in January in many Minnesota school districts—including Edina's, where Tuesday will mark the fifth day of cancelled classes this month.

A wind chill warning is in effect in Hennepin County until noon on Tuesday:

* WIND CHILLS... 35 TO 50 BELOW ZERO ARE EXPECTED MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY.

* BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW... NORTHWEST WINDS GUSTING TO AROUND 30 MPH WILL CREATE AREAS OF BLOWING AND DRIFTING SNOW THIS AFTERNOON FROM WEST CENTRAL INTO SOUTH CENTRAL MINNESOTA.
