Strib Makes Endorsement in Fields, Ellison Race

The Twin Cities publication had kind words for both candidates, but ultimately said Ellison was a better fit for the job.

The Star Tribune believes Keith Ellison (DFL) would best serve Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, according to an editorial penned Sunday.

While the publication ultimately endorsed Ellison over Chris Fields (R), the editorial does praise the Republican newcomer as "impressive."

"[Fields] needs to invest more time in the community before he's ready for Congress," the editorial reads.

The endorsement does mention the volatile KFAI debate between the two candidates, admitting Ellison "failed to meet his own standards of decorum" in calling Fields a "lowlife scumbag." That said, the Strib argues the meltdown was out of character for Ellison—who apologized for the outburst—and that voters should "give Ellison a pass this time and send him back to the U.S. House."

Fields, Ellison Make Nice During Panel Discussion

Ellison and Fields had a face-to-face interaction for the first time since their heated KFAI debate during a panel discussion this week, but MPR reports it was a much more subdued affair this time around.

The two candidates were guests on local television program "Conversations with Al McFarlane," taking questions from a small panel at separate times. During a brief overlap in the studio, MPR said they exchanged "a brief and polite 'how do you do' as Fields finished his segment with the panel."

Fields continued to push his desire to debate Ellison again before Election Day, saying he holds nothing against his DFL opponent for what happened during the KFAI debate.

"I think side-by-side in a town hall forum where the voters, where the people get to ask the questions — I mean, that is fair," Fields said. "That should be part of our democracy. He should be willing to defend his record. I'm afraid right now he's trying to duck this debate."

Ellison neither referred to Ellison by name, nor talked about their last debate, according to MPR.

Ellison-Hosted 'Get Out to Vote Concert' Hits First Avenue

An Ellison-sponsored concert featuring a number of local hip-hop artists took place Sunday, Oct. 28 at First Avenue.

The Get Out to Vote Concert was—appropriately—designed to get Twin Cities residents registered and ready to vote on Nov. 6.

The show featured artists Brother Ali, Slug (of Atmosphere), Dessa and Sims of Doomtree, I Self Devine and several others. Ellison hosted the concert and was posting pictures of the festivities on social media.

Ellison managed to please at least one attendee. His daughter took to Twitter afterward to congratulate him on a job well done.

"Not too shabby of a show," she wrote.

In 2009 I became homeless for two years. I never had felt so alone. Then one day out of the blue Keith Ellison tweets me saying he wants to meet. It was the first sign of hope that I had felt in two years.
Ellison has strong ties to my former employer Delta Airlines. One of his top donors was my old union. I knew based on my contract If my case was reviewed Id get my job back with back pay. I already had the judges ruling all I needed was my contract honored. Back then the Delta merger was going on and I fell through the cracks. I felt renewed hope having Keith Ellison reach out to me. I contacted his office as he asked me to do and waited. A few days later his office told me he was too busy to meet. I tweeted Rep Ellison this. His reply was “Not True” and that he just needed to find time. A few days later.... He Blocked me. One of the worst things you can do to a homeless person is fuel them with hope and then take it away. I judge a man by his actions not just his words. Keith Ellison was the one to reach out to me not once but twice. And why for whatever reason he felt the need to block me instead of being a man instead of simply saying he had no time is beyond me. Solving homelessness is a huge task. I believe that if Keith Ellison had invested a small amount time he could have made a huge impact in helping me get my life back. If Ellison can’t keep his word to a homeless person.... Who will he keep his word to?

Shame on the Strib for endorsing Ellison. Contrary to the Strib, Ellison has had many of these outbursts, he just wasn't caught up until now. I also think it's a shame that MN does not do a better job when it comes to electing people of color. It's a very sad statement. I still will not be voting for Ellison or Linda Higgins. I watched the Golden Valley debate and could not believe how horrible she was. Higgins could not answer any of the questions and she spent needless time arguing with the moderator. It's clear Linda Higgins has a "white previlege" complex.

Ellison is a radical extremist. There will never be bi-partisanship in Congress with radicals like him in office.

Wow, if this is true that is really sad.

Yes the republicans in congress are all for bi-partisanship. Give me a break...

I have a feeling that there are a few missing details here...

The new layout of the Patch is fine. A few of the liberal/left-wing posters are not happy thatRead More they can't have a running commentary on each story, and hurl personal insults at conservative posters.

Hi @mary kosters. Were you able to fill out the feedback form? We're collecting feedback so we canRead More decide what, if any, changes to make in the future with the layout. The lead photo of the marching band is intended to stay the same every day. That is not a story photo; it is a picture that shows a slice of life in Edina. Can you be a bit more specific about what you don't like about the division of news, home and business? Those divisions are almost identical to how things were divided prior to the redesign, so I want to understand what you find useless.
