Sprinkler System Extinguishes Fire at York Avenue Apartment Building

The Edina Fire Department shared statistics showing that sprinkler systems dramatically reduce the risk of death by fire.

An apartment fire last Thursday on the 7200 block of York Avenue was swiftly extinguished by the building's sprinkler system.

As Edina's fire department blog pointed out, the incident came a little more than a year after a 2012 apartment fire, in a sprinkler-less building, caused major damage and injured three.

"The sprinkler saved the apartment building, minimized damage and costs and kept countless lives out of harm’s way," the department wrote in a blog post.

The odds of dying in a house fire falls by 80 percent when a home is equipped with a sprinkler system, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
