Edina Police Chief Jeff Long Applying for Job in Lakeville

Long has served as Edina's police chief since the start of 2010.

Jeff Long has served on the Edina police force for 20 years and, for nearly four years, as the city's police chief. But Long's lengthy history with Edina doesn't mean he isn't considering other professional options.

Last week, the city of Lakeville announced that Long is one of five semifinalists for Lakeville Police Chief. The position has been open since former Lakeville Police Chief Thomas Vonhof retired at the end of September.

Long has been a vocal figure in Edina, writing a regular blog and posting thoughts on Twitter.

Compensation will likely not be a major factor in Long's decision. The current Lakeville police chief receives $130,027 per year; Long's Edina salary is set at $129,958.

Long, and the four other semifinalists, will interview with representatives from the Lakeville Police Department, city administration and the city council on Saturday, Nov. 16. They will then choose two or three of the candidates as finalists for further interviews and testing, according to the city.

Lakeville City Administrator Steve Mielke hopes to have a police chief chosen by early December.

Long could not be reached for comment for this story.
