An unidentified male Edina High School student is being charged with making terroristic threats—a felony level offense—after writing a violent post about Edina High School on the Internet, according to the Edina Police Department.
Within hours of learning of the anonymous threats, Edina Police were able to successfully identify and take the responsible juvenile into custody.
A police spokesperson confirmed the suspect is a male student at Edina High School and said "detectives are hoping to have charges filed by day's end."
In a disturbing post on popular Internet forum 4chan, the anonymous user said he would "assault the school" using a sniper rifle from the nearby woods. The poster threatened to attack students in the school's common areas, then said he would "hit the school with an RPG like my friends in Libya." He also threatened to take his own life, provided he was not shot first.
Police are making additional patrols near the high school as a precautionary measure, though officials have said they believe the threat was unfounded and the situation is under control.
EHS Principal Bruce Locklear sent a message to parents of students Friday morning, Oct. 5, stating Edina Police notified district administrators of the anonymous threat shortly after midnight. Locklear said the threat referenced "an act of violence that would happen at the school on Friday."
"The safety of our students and staff is always our top priority and we take threats against our school seriously," Locklear said. "Individuals who violate this trust will be dealt with accordingly."
The male student has not been identified at this point. Classes at Edina High School—and for the entire district—will proceed as normal.
Locklear said the district is blessed to have such a strong relationship with Edina Police, adding district administrators appreciate the work that went into identifying the juvenile responsible for the threat "in such an expedient and professional manner."
