O’Meara-Leer-Wagner & Kohl launches Second Harvest Heartland’s Food Mania Challenge

The Firm’s appetitive to give back to the community drives ambitious campaign to stock local food shelves

One of Minnesota’s top civil litigating firms, the Minneapolis law firm of O’Meara, Leer, Wagner & Kohl announced today its involvement in the Food Mania Challenge to benefit Second Harvest Heartland. The challenge, which runs until June 27, pits several Twin Cities organizations against each other all in the name of helping others.

The attorneys and employees at O’Meara, Leer, Wagner and Kohl are joining forces to raise money and collect food that will help local residents during the summer months, a time typically busy at food shelves, but slow in terms of charitable support. This marks the third time the Firm has participated in this challenge. The Firm has won each of the previous times it has participated.

“We take great pride in giving back to our community and this event is the perfect mix of competition and goodwill,” said Managing Shareholder, Shamus O’Meara. “Charitable events like this bring us closer together to have some fun and help remind us how important it is to assist those in times of need.”

During the challenge the firm has put together a calendar of events and fundraisers to support its efforts. Among these events are a trivia day, a firm-wide raffle, candy sales and the always popular casual days, where participants can pay $5 per day during the challenge, to dress casually at the firm. “With temperatures rising, it’s the perfect time to come to work in cooler, more comfortable clothes. For five dollars it’s a bargain and every cent goes to put food on someone’s table,” said Sherrie Hunt, the Firm’s director of community giving. “These events bring our employees closer together. It’s an opportunity for our firm to actively display one of its core principles, and that’s giving back to the community.”

As one of four law firms in the Food Mania Challenge, the Firm takes the competition seriously. “Each time we participate, we win,” said Hunt. “It won’t be easy this time around, but our firm thrives on this type of challenge. I know we have the right people to do whatever it takes to raise the most money for a very important cause. So many people go without food. The numbers are growing and the need is staggering. Hopefully this challenge can help satisfy some of the need, at least temporarily. It’s up to all of us to give back and do what we can for those in need.”

Hunt said summer time is the perfect time for a challenge of this size. “Without school lunch programs, many children all over Minnesota go hungry, because that one or two meals a day they were accustomed to for the past nine months is now gone,” she said. “Much of what we collect and contribute will go to providing these children with nutritious meals during the summer months.”

With participation at the firm at 100-percent, the odds of third victory are high. “This is a good natured competition among law firms for a very serious cause,” said Hunt. “Our employees have been very generous in the past and this year will be no different.”
