Edina Native Heads Up Big Sonoma Winery

Dave Ready Jr., an Edina High School graduate, is head winemaker at Murphy-Goode, one of Sonoma County's largest vineyards.

Dave Ready Jr. grew up around wine.

The Edina High School graduate's father, Dave Ready Sr., started a small winery cooperative in the early 1980s that helped bring fine California wine to Minnesota.

Today, Ready Jr. is the head winemaker at Murphy-Goode, one of the biggest vineyards in Sonoma County.

The Star Tribune spoke with Ready about wine and his Edina roots:

The younger Ready graduated from Edina High in 1988 and soon headed west, thinking more about rock than vines. While his father shared the love of music — they attended a Grateful Dead concert together — he undoubtedly was happy when Junior went to work at the winery, as a “cellar rat.” And when it turned out he had an aptitude for the job.

“Dave Jr.’s got a very good palate like his dad, which is pretty important in what they both did,” said John Hoffman, who still runs the Winery Associates business with his wife, Lucy. “There’s also an energy when they’re around people. Both of them really like being around people.”
