Edina Readers React to Rolling Stone Cover of Accused Boston Bomber

Are you boycotting the latest issue of Rolling Stone?

By now, you’ve seen the cover. The July edition of Rolling Stone sports a self portrait of the accused Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

By now, you’ve seen the local reaction. Drug stores, like Edina's CVS and Walgreens, say they will not carry the magazine, in a protest of sorts.

But we want to know: Will you, personally, protest the racey editorial decision? A Nashua Patch blogger said that he intends to boycott the “advertisers of Rolling Stone magazine.”

On Wednesday, we asked Edina residents what they thought about the magazine cover. More than 20 Edina Patch Facebook friends had opinions to share. Some included the following:

  • Kimberly Hanson: Rolling Stone has the right to publish it and stores have the right not to sell it. It's not the article itself but putting him on the cover looking like many a rock star does seem like glorification to me. How many people dream of being on that cover? Surely there are plenty that deserve it more.Do you have an opinion about the cover? Will you stop buying the magazine? Will you stop going to the stores that sell it?
  • Lisa Hawkins Hengel: It disgusts me that they have his face on the cover of Rollingstone. He has not earned it, nor does he deserve it. It is not censorship that they are choosing not to sell it - it's not like they are burning it. They are just sending the strongest message possible to the magazine that this was an incredibly poor choice for a cover. If I were in any way personally connected to any of the bombing victims I would be outraged and horrified at this poor journalistic decision.
  • Juan Miguel Avila: This has nothing to do with censoring the press. I have no issues with the article. My issue is with the cover. It glorifies and rewards Tsnaraev with fame and celebrity for the sole purpose of creating controversy in a lame attempt to sell magazines. Duh.
