Golf Ball Size Hail, Lightning, Downed Trees and Thousands without Power: Storm in Edina

Golf ball size hail and strong winds cut power and toppled trees in Edina Tuesday night.

The weather over Edina took a biblical turn Tuesday evening. A full rainbow over the city preceded rain, rapid wind bursts and golf-ball sized hail. Streets flooded and trees and power lines were downed, leaving thousands without power.

On Twitter, residents shared photos of a rabbit killed by falling hail and of a block of ice that had come down from the heavens shaped like a flower. The National Weather Service measured the hail at two inches in Edina.

Night to Unite events were cut short in Edina as the bad weather moved into town.

Xcel Energy said about 50,000 customers were affected by the storm across the Twin Cities. By Wednesday morning, most customers had their power turned back on.
