Edina Galleria Losing Two Local Retailers

Whymsy and Three Rooms are closing their doors this month.

Two local retailers are leaving the Edina Galleria this month.

Whymsy, a women's clothing and accessories boutique, had its last day on Jan. 4, and Three Rooms, a home decor store, will be leaving by the end of the month.

Patty Burrets, the co-owner of Three Rooms, told the Star Tribune that the store tried to move to a smaller space after facing competition from Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel, but none was available.

“I felt pressure that it was tilting toward national retailers,” she said.

Sargent Johnson, the director at Hines Global REIT, which bought the mall from former owner Gabbert & Beck for $127 million in 2012, told the paper that more than 25 of the Edina Galleria's retailers—about 40 percent—remain local.

“We want to maintain the strong emphasis on locals,” he said, “But there is an ebb and flow between 40 and 60 percent, local and national tenants or vice versa.”

Three Rooms' "Moving On Sale" started Jan. 2. Whymsy is selling tables, bags, hangers, mirrors and other goods on Craigslist.
