"We believe it will be a great representation of the Edina Art Fair." The 46th Annual Art Fair kicks off at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 1 and runs through Sunday, June 3, with booths scattered throughout the 50th & France Business District of Edina. Letter: Grandview District Perfect Spot for Art Museum

One local artist believes the Minnesota Museum of American Art should be transported to Edina's Grandview District.

When I was a young artist growing up, I would frequently take the bus over an hour from south Minneapolis to the landmark center to view the Minnesota Museum of American Art. The collection was the most important to me as a painter than any other in Minnesota. The demotion of the collection to temporal showings and storage has been the greatest loss to the arts culture in the history of Minnesota. When I discuss this loss with others they either have no idea what I am talking about or simply do not care. It is an insult to the arts community that this world class collection of art has been all but erased completely from the consciousness of the community worst of all people with great interest in the arts. During this month dedicated to …

Apparently you haven't visited Ediana as of late. There is enough diversity that Fairview Southdale Hospital has had to install bullet proof glass and an armed guard at the emergency room nurses station. Edina was once like a gated suburb. I used to call it Minnetonka junior. Edina has had to rebuild its jails, increase its police force, and businesses have had to install security measures unseen…   more ›

The NAAM Foundation recently recognized Edina Public Schools for its commitment and support of music education.

The award-winning Edina Public Schools received yet another feather in its cap recently, when it was named one of the NAMM Foundation's 2012 Best Communities for Music Education. Established in 1999, the award acknowledges schools and districts throughout the country for their commitment to and support of music education as part of the core curriculum. Schools scoring in the 80th percentile or higher on the Best Communities for Music Education survey earn the distinction. “We know that arts education develops the skills needed by an innovative 21st century work force, including creativity, collaboration, communication, and teamwork,” Superintendent Ric Dressen said in a release. “Arts and music education helps us reach our goal of …

Working Group Hosting Gathering of Painters

The City of Edina's Arts & Culture group is holding an event on Friday, May 4.

Do you know of any local painters? Perhaps you are one yourself.  Regardless of the circumstances, the city's Arts & Culture Working Group is calling all painters to come to the Edina Art Center at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 4, to take part in a discussion. The group is seeking the following to take part in the meeting: The purpose of the gathering is to have attendees discuss what amenities they would like available at the Art Center for painters. Whether it's more gallery space, an increased number of classes, studio space or a reference library, any and all ideas are welcome. Anyone who is interested in participating but unable to attend the meeting is encouraged to contact Margery Ann Wells via email at ann@GreenMedicineHealth.com or by …

Catch a Glimpse of Edina in Watercolors

A California-based design firm gives Edina a watercolor overlay.

As part of our ongoing effort to showcase our community in all mediums, today we're presenting Edina in watercolors. Stamen Design, a California studio, has created a cartographic technique that overlays maps with watercolors. Play around and zoom in and out of scenic Edina. One can't-miss landmark to help orient yourself is the Edina Country Club, seen as the giant green swath above. If you're curious to see what a few other Minnesota cities look like in watercolor, check out this post from from Minnesota Public Radio.

Human Rights Commission Encourages Residents to See 'Bully'

The film will be screening at the Landmark Lagoon Theater in Uptown Minneapolis on Friday, April 13.

As part of an ongoing effort to bring attention to the rampant amount of bullying taking place across the country and in Edina itself, the city's Human Rights & Relations Commission is encouraging residents to head to the movies this Friday. "Bully," a new film aimed at bringing a human scale to the more than 13 million American children who will be bullied this year, is opening at Uptown Minneapolis' Landmark Lagoon Theater this Friday, April 13. The documentary film takes an in-depth look at how bullying has impacted five different families. No word yet on if the film will be screening a bit closer to home—the Lagoon Theater is under the same ownership of 50th & France's own Edina Cinema—but we'd love to hear from any locals who have …

I was not happy to hear that there has been a pattern of hazing at Edina HS which is certainly a form of bullying. The school needs to show that zero tolerance is zero tolerance towards any activity that is detrimental to the students health and well being.   more ›

Peter Pan, Captain Hook Taking Edina by Storm

Valley View's spring musical will take the stage of the Performing Arts Center April 12-14.

More than 110 students are hard at work getting ready to take Edina residents on a journey to Neverland, when Valley View Middle School presents Peter Pan on April 12-14. Theater Director Elizabeth Chaigne is working alongside the students to put together the production of J.M. Barrie's classic tale of a boy who never grows up. The production has two casts for the main roles in Peter Pan, giving more students an opportunity to hit the stage. The titular role will be played by Ben Weiman and Luke Eidsvold, while Wendy is played by Tori Adams and Andreley Bielland. Tinkerbell will be played in both performances by Isabel Thompson. Attendees can join in the adventures of Peter, Wendy, John, Michael, the Lost Boys, Tiger Lily and the dastardly…

(PHOTOS) South View Band Serenades Minnesota Educators

The 9th grade band recently helped present a session at a Minnesota Music Educators Association convention.

The 9th grade band from South View Middle School—alongside world-renowned author and composer Bruce Pearson—recently helped educate band teachers from throughout Minnesota. The group of middle schoolers and Pearson presented a session at the Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) convention earlier this month at the Minneapolis Convention Center.  Held every February, the conference features more than 100 educational sessions, 35 concerts and a trade show. More than 1,300 music educators and nearly 6,000 people attend the event every year. The South View band is a 73-member group that feeds directly into Edina High School's band program. The budding musicians rehearse every day under the direction of Geneva Fitzsimonds and Charles …

APOPScalypse Strikes Edina High Band

The 59th annual music extravaganza continues this weekend at EHS.

Bringing the apocalypse to Edina High School was a unanimous decision. The traditionally "arduous process" of coming up with a theme for the annual POPS concert was little more than a single question this year, according to Concert Band Director Paul Kile. "It came time to talk about it and I just asked 'Are we all OK with calling it APOPScalypse?'" Kile recalled. "Then came the collective 'Yay!'" Given the year 2012—and its link to the end of the Mayan calendar—Kile said a number of students had hoped the 59th annual student-run variety show would focus on apocalyptic scenarios. This story behind this year's show is pretty simple: Something apocalyptic has gone wrong in Edina, but true to the band's nature, the show must go on. "Neither …
