What to Wear at Backyard BBQs, Block Parties
Edina is buzzing with summer activities. When getting dressed, factor in 'fun' first and 'fashion' as a close second.
As burgers, brats and BBQ chicken bring friends together to celebrate summer, it seems we’re suddenly barraged with backyard barbeques and block parties. And for many, “what to wear” to these events becomes a more difficult decision than “what to bring.”
Once you’re done wavering between watermelon or Waldorf salad, wander over to your wardrobe and assemble some summer ensembles.
Block Party
If you’re bustling off to a block party, keep it casual:
- Skinny cargo pants with a fitted Minnesota Twins tee.
- Jeans with a basic black tank top, sandals and a pretty pink pedicure.
- A dark colored capri, heather gray Henley and flips flops with a fun flower.
Keep it comfortable. Remember you may be crouching curbside assisting kidlettes with niblets, or better yet, balancing both a beverage and a Byerly's bratwurst on one poor little paper plate. Dress casual and comfortable, like you’re ready to have fun. You will.
If your block parties tend to morph into late night bonfires, leave your cute coat at home to avoid the smokey smell and dry cleaning bill. Bring along your daughter’s Hornets hoodie or something warm and washable. It’s dark out—no one cares.
Backyard BBQs
If your invitation arrived by mail or official Evite, it’s most likely a celebration or "event" you are attending. Sundresses and skirts are perfectly appropriate and so much fun to wear. Try on a:
- Strapless flowy dress with easy, breezy, summer accessories. Perhaps a flat sandal or an unfussy wedge.
- A simple cotton skirt paired with bright embellished tee and bold bracelet.
- Summery halter-style dress, oversized ring and easy espadrilles.
If your invitation was more informal and extended over the fence or via quick email, expect a wide array of attire to make an appearance. Everything from skirts to Sketchers.
Keep in mind that at neighborhood and family gatherings, it’s very likely somebody will bust out the bocce balls or set the net for badminton. If you’re one who loves summer fun and must participate in an impromptu game of PIG, avoid heels and fancy fabrics. It’s more about what NOT to wear, than what to wear.
On that note, TLC’s What Not to Wear is coming to Minneapolis and is searching for women whose wardrobes need help! Serious help.
If you’ve seen the show, you know that hosts Stacy and Clinton work with individuals (by surprise) to transform their subject's disastrous wardrobe into a fantastic, fashionable, flattering collection of clothing. In fact, the two entertaining style celebrities are the inspiration behind my own styling business. Nominate your fashion challenged friend or family member to win a $5,000 wardrobe and professional makeover on a future episode of What Not To Wear.
By the way, the contest closes on the BIGGEST BBQ weekend of the year: July 5, 2011. More info can be found here.
