Hornets Draw Lakeville North in Opening Round of State Tournament
The Edina boys hockey team was seeded third in the tournament, just behind Hill-Murray and Duluth East.
To get there, however, Edina will need to get through a number of Minnesota's top Class 2A contenders. The Hornets (22-6) drew the third seed Saturday morning, Mar. 2, and will face off against Lakeville North (11-16-1) in the opening round of the state tournament on Thursday, Mar. 7.
Edina will take the ice at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul 30 minutes after the conclusion of the 11 a.m. game Thursday, which will see Duluth East (No. 2) face Moorhead.
Lake Conference rival Wayzata took the fourth seed and will battle fifth-seeded Centennial Thursday evening, just after No. 1 Hill-Murray plays Eastview at 6 p.m.
Lakeville North is actually one of the few state tournament teams Edina has yet to compete against this season, as the Hornets have faced everyone except for the Panthers and Moorhead. The Hornets recorded three wins over Wayzata—on scores of 3-0, 5-4 and 2-1—and shut out Centennial 4-0, but lost to both Duluth East and Hill-Murray in regular season play.
Class 2A semifinals are set for Friday evening, with the Class 2A championship game scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 9.
