Highlands Elementary Principal Out Following Bicycling Accident

Peter Hodne broke his collarbone and cracked his pelvis over St. Patrick's Day weekend.

Highlands Elementary School Principal Peter Hodne is taking some unexpected time away from his award-winning school, after sustaining extensive injuries from a bicycling accident last weekend.

Hodne, who has been principal at Highlands for 20 years now, spoke with WCCO after crashing his bike over St. Patrick's Day weekend. He sustained a broken collarbone and cracked pelvis, according to the report.

“It looked very nice out," Hodne told WCCO. "The streets were melting off, and the sun was out. I didn’t think it would be that icy."

Despite having his bike equipped with snow tires and wearing a helmet, Hodne wasn't able to avoid taking a spill due to the slippery conditions.

He'll have to be off of his leg for at least six weeks, he said, though he's not exactly sure when he'll be back to work at Highlands.
