Edina Icers Edge Burnsville for State Tournament Trip

The Hornets defeated the Blaze 3-2 Wednesday night to capture the Section 2AA Championship.

The third time was apparently not the charm for the Burnsville Blaze, who came up short in the Section 2AA title game for the third consecutive year to the Edina Hornets.

The Edina boys hockey team earned yet another State Tournament berth Wednesday night, after powering past Burnsville in the Section 2AA championship game at Mariucci Arena.

The Hornets fell behind early in the first period, after Burnsville's Tyler Sheehy snuck one past goalie Willie Benjamin just a little more than two minutes into the contest. Sheehy would finish the night with both of Burnsville's goals.

Edina quickly recovered, thanks to Andy Jordahl and Dan Hinueber scoring back-to-back goals to close out the first period.

When Cullen Munson notched another goal shortly after 11 minutes in the second, Edina had all of the points they needed. The Hornets held off Burnsville for the remainder of the contest to earn yet another trip to the state tournament.

After taking a few days to savor the victory, Edina will head to the Xcel Energy Center for the opening round of the tournament on Wednesday, Mar. 6. Seeding for the tournament will be announced in the coming days.

This year's tournament will be interesting, as defending champions Benilde-St. Margaret's will not be a part of the action. The Red Knights came up short in the Section 6AA championship game against Wayzata.
