Federal Bankruptcy? Downey Has Contingency Plan
"This is something we need to be mindful of."
Two years ago, he recalls Democrats brought "ridicule" to his plan. Last year, his idea fizzled in the midst of heated budget negotiations.
Undaunted, one week into the 2012 Legislative session, Rep. Keith Downey (R-Edina) is determined to push through language in the state budget that includes plans in case the federal government goes bankrupt.
"Any large organization should do contingency planning based on the loss of major suppliers or vendors," he said. "If the federal government would ever have some kind of financial situation where they couldn't make good on our payments, I think we'd do well as an agency to start planning for what that would look like."
Downey's HF545, which came before the State Government Finance Committee late last week, would require the state budget document to include federal insolvency contingency plans. Downey said the bill breezed through the hearing with very little fanfare, and now heads to the Ways and Means Committee for further discussion.
"I think it's really good timing," he said. "People are thinking about the fiscal situation emerging at the federal level and this is something we need to be mindful of."
Downey and his Republican colleagues have been busy writing a substantial amount of legislation for the remainder of the session, which he said they will start rolling out in the next few weeks.

Hmmm Downey didn't get his way. Perhaps if he has spent less time arguing in favor of the hateful Defense of Marriage bill during the last weeks of the session, and more time on the budget, he would have made some progress. But alas, he was to weak and small minded to stand up and say, lets focus on the economy rather than our backwoods, misguided and divisive feelings towards homosexuals. Way to keep you eye not he prize Keith. Or perhaps that was your prize all along. Real leaders like John Kriesel stood up.

Hypocritical to talk about a federal default contingency when the state doesn’t pay its own portion of school funding on time so schools have to take out loans that cost the taxpayers more money. I opposed to all of it but where does Downey stand on the stadium issue. Why isn't he talking about important issues facing our state?

Does patch only know Republicans? I believe I am seeing a biased trend here. Let me know when Katheren Kersten will be covered. She can WRITE ABOUT HOW HOMOSEXUALS RUINED Amy Koch's family in the comedy section.
DOWNEY HAS STATED HE DOESN'T care what Edina City Council does and patch covers him more than the later so it would seem.
Downey supports school bullying and is homophobic. IT LEADS to beastiality and polygamy. HOW CAN patch support him. He ruins lives and families.
The US is only going bankrupt if the Republicans get us into another senseless war and encourage no control over the robber Barron's in this state and in Washington and NY.

John, I wouldn't say we only know or support Republicans. I understand your concerns, but given the circumstances of our community—all of our elected legislators are GOP—it only makes sense that our coverage would reflect that. Capitol Review is designed to let voters know exactly what their legislators have been up to on a weekly basis, not to provide comprehensive coverage of state politics. I assure you we'll be covering any and all candidates in 2012 races and will gladly provide coverage to readers of whoever is elected to office.

I see "Not a Homo" can't use his real name. Must be another closet case. He must be Not a Homo Sapien. Very sad. And how does he know I am a homosexual? or a Christian or a homeowner or a college graduate or a Jew or an African American or a Somali or a Luthern or a.....
I guess ignorance is bliss. such a sorry pathetic person "Not a Homo" is.
