Art Downey Honored Prior to State Swim Meet

The longtime Edina swimming coach was recognized Friday for 55 years of coaching and leadership.

For Art Downey, age is merely a number. A number you can tweak.

“(I’m) 28 still,” Downey said Friday, joking. “I don’t know if you’ve figured it out yet, but you need to pick an age you like and stay with it. That’s what I did a long time ago.”

Of course, the longtime Edina boys swimming and diving coach has been teaching kids in and out of the pool for 55 years. On Friday before the Class AA state swimming preliminary meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, Downey was recognized for his tenure as one of the most successful coaches in state history.

He received a standing ovation from fans, coaches, officials and participants before the meet began, and more than 150 pairs of Downey’s signature black glasses were handed out and worn by those in attendance as a tribute.

Lakeville South coach Rick Ringeisen was proud to be part of the festivities.

“He’s been an icon ever since I was in high school swimming,” said Ringeisen, who has coached for 31 years. “It’s the way he looks at the sport. He says he’s competing with people, not against people. He’s about teaching kids class and integrity and how to conduct themselves in life.”

Downey has been named Section Coach of the year 11 times, State Coach of the Year six times and National Coach of the Year once in his 55 seasons of leadership.

He has a 483-141-1 record in dual meets, and his Edina program has yielded 10 team championships and 55 individual titles. His Hornets had 15 individuals competing in this year’s state meet.

For Downey, speaking humbly about the recognition, the gesture was generous.

As for the masses wearing his eyewear?

“I told them they look better,” Downey joked. “Now they are in style.”
