One-Eyed Dog Gives Joy to Edina

This Shepherd mix is available for adoption through Secondhand Hounds.

Joy may have only one eye now, but her name is still quite fitting. She and her brother Skor, who also had a bad eye removed, run around their foster home just like any other happy-go-lucky pups.

Joy, Skor, their five siblings and their mother arrived in the care of Edina-based rescue organization Secondhand Hounds after the mother was found as a stray. It is suspected that the mother was abandoned because she was pregnant. The other five puppies have since been adopted. Joy and Skor both got infections when they were very young and their eyes were still closed, causing glaucoma. They each recently had surgery to remove the blind eye and their foster mom Melissa Erickson said they’re doing great.

“They act like regular, fun-loving puppies,” Erickson said. “They never had sight in that eye so it is not something they are missing.”

What Joy is missing, however, is a forever home. Secondhand Hounds was founded in August of 2009. Since then, the organization has placed more than 1,600 pets in loving homes. If you have a loving home for Joy, fill out an adoption application on the Secondhand Hounds website.
